Terry

I can't fucking believe it; I was ready to do a few more weeks. All set for the mind games the screws play. ‘Your parole's been revoked, we'll keep you in here’ that type of thing. I remember them winding young Richie up before he got out, he'd done fifteen and was due to get out in a week's time. For the whole week they were winding him up about this and that. ‘We'll plant some gear in your cell, we'll say you attacked a screw and then beat the shit out of you to 'restrain' you’ all that bollocks. The poor geezer was on tenterhooks, he'd waited that long to get out and he genuinely thought they were going to take it away from him. In the end he was that tense and wound up that he landed one on some taff during an argument in association and they added another month onto him for that, bunch of wankers.

So anyway, I'm ready for all that; cool as a cucumber. Nothing they say will get to me or surprise me. I'm ready for breakfast, looking forward to a bit of tea and toast when all of a sudden they come and tell me ‘Pack your gear Briggs you're leaving.’ At first I thought they were on a wind up, then, when I realised they were being serious about me leaving the nick I thought they were putting me closer to London in preparation for my release. I had to say to them 'Look, I'm staying in the North East for a bit when I get out, I don't need to be moved to another prison.' And then...it was fucking beautiful chap it really was...the screw Hall, the alright one he says 'No Terry, you're leaving us today, for good hopefully, get your gear together and you'll be out of here in half an hour.'

I just slumped on the bed. After twenty-five years of prison, nearly half my fucking life, I was finally getting out. I could have a pint, go to a football match, go on holiday, fucking hell I could get some skirt. It just wasn't sinking in and I was sure some twat would come along in a minute shouting about it all being a mistake, so I tried to busy myself a bit by sorting out my meagre possessions and hurrying the process along.

I had a big stash of Mars Bars and some tobacco so I gave Psycho Bates a shout along the landing and bought Spanish's mate little Dave some protection. I also mentioned that a very good friend of mine, Carlos Reeves, might be arriving here soon and it'd be nice if he didn't get any aggravation. Batesy was choked that I was giving him all this and promised faithfully that he'd look after the boys. After that it was all systems go to the exit door. Word had got round quickly and there was a queue of bodies shaking my hand on the way out.
